What a great feeling!

After our spelling quiz today I told the students that we were going to work on Critical Thinking skills next. They replied with a resounding "Yeah!" Definitely warms the heart:)

Here are two that we worked on today: Can you figure them out?

The Amazing Fall
A man who was not wearing a parachute jumped out of a plane. He landed on hard ground yet he was unhurt. Why?

Flat Tire
Four college students arrived late for a lecture, explaining to their instructor that their car had suffered a flat tire on the way there. How did the instructor immediately show the other students that the late arrivals were not telling the truth?

I'll be sure to post the answers later:)

Critical Thinking

We have been working on critical thinking skills. One of our students was so excited about the skills that he borrowed a book from a math teacher to share with our class. We had Miss S. share a few stories with us today.

Candy!

Over Christmas time I found a candy that you "smack" and it makes little slices of chocolate. The company also makes them for Valentine's Day so of course I picked one up.

Our Pen Pal Letters

Our pen pal letters arrived in the mail yesterday(since the students had off they did not receive the letters until today). You would have thought it was Christmas Day! Above is a shot of the students with the letters!

Mapping out the Action Plan

The students have developed a service project and here are some pictures of them mapping out the different plans.

" I Bet You Can't"- Part 1

Today is Tuesday which means we had our lesson with Mrs. L. We joined Mrs. H's class. Our first activity was, "I Bet You Can't". This activity involved walking down the line and the students had to try their hardest not to smile. Here are some snapshots of the lesson. Afterwards Mrs. L processed how easy it is to smile and be happy:)

"Snowflake Bentley"

Today we read the picture book "Snowflake Bentley". We learned about how each snowflake is different. We created our own snowflakes and wrote down three facts about Snowflake Bentley.

"My Brother Martin"

Today one of our students volunteered to read the picture book: "My Brother Martin". Thanks L for doing such great job at reading!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's life we wrote about the similarities between our dreams and those of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Below are some of our dreams:

"I have a dream that all people will get along regardless of their race or culture."
"I have a dream that all children would feel that he/she has at least one adult that he/she can trust and talk to."
" I have a dream that the global warming will stop, that there will be no more war, that everybody will treat each other equally, and that all animals will be healthy and alive!"
" My dream is that people will start treating animals better. So we shoudl try to better global warming, stop poaching, stop cutting down forests(at least cut down a little bit of forests) Because then the animals will be happier, and if the animals are happy, all people will also be happy."
" I have a dream that my life with my family will get much better and the people that I love wouldn't go to another place like far away from me but I would like them to be much closer to me."
" I have a dream that everyone was nice to each other and didn't judge people on their color, skin or religion. I dream that people will stop fighting and the world to be in peace."
" I have a dream that global wars will stop if we learn to cooperate with each other."
" I have a dream that there will be peace and happiness all around the world."
" My dream is the Earth to be in peace and love."
" I have a dream that everyone has respect and lives in peace."
" I have a dream that everyone, treats everyone well, no bullying, no mean people. I want PEACE, love and happiness to everyone and people think in other persons feelings."
" I have a dream that people STOP being RACIST! Please!"
" I have a dream that every bad thing in the world and the galaxy never happens, like meteors hitting Earth, and global warming. For the sakes of our future I have a dream that we have a peaceful future of our Mother Earth."
" I dream that I will change myself."
"I have a dream that one day everyone will realize that to change the whole world we must first change our own world and bring kindness, truth and love to those around us. As we reach out to those in our life, they in turn reach out to others. Then peace, love, trust, respect and kindness will spread like a virus. My dream: Change yourself for the better- Change the world!"
" I have a dream that war will be no longer and slavery and suffering will be freedom instead, that the world will be in peace."

Fact or Opinion?

Yesterday we worked on our Fact or Opinion skills. I read the sentences aloud to the students and they had to quickly write F or O on the board. We had a great time listening to the funny sentences and deciding which category each one fell into.
