Colin Powell



Powell was the son of Jamaican immigrants. He was educated in the New York City public schools. He participated in ROTC at City College of New York and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He later earned an MBA from
George Washington University. He retired as General of the Army in 1993 and was selected by George W. Bush to serve as Secretary of State in 2001.

Florence Joyner



Flo Jo was a phenomenal athlete. At the age of seven she began running and by adolescence was a record-breaking athlete and a straight A student. Flo Jo was a terrific role model. Not only did she excel in sports but she was also a great wife, mother, clothing designer, and sports broadcaster. In the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Flo Jo won four medals. She elevated women’s track to another level.

After the Me Bag activity we played a game called: "I like people who_____." The goal of the game is to switch places with a person who likes the same thing as you. For example: I like people who like cats. Whoever also likes cats would switch places with another person. If you are in the middle you get to say, "I like people who_____."

Yesterday we had class with Mrs. L. We had a great time. Special thanks to Mrs. H.'s class for joining us. The students were assigned to bring in a bag that had 3-4 objects that let us know more about them.

Dr. Ida Gray Nelson


Nelson was the first African-American woman to graduate from any dental school in 1890 from the University of Michigan Dental School. She was also the first black woman to practice dentistry in Chicago. She served as a mentor for other African-American women to enter the profession.

Our last stop was the bakery department. The students got to try out a special type of bread(I think my old age is kicking in as I can't remember the name)
