Sarah Emma Edmonds(1841-1898) was the only official female veteran of the Union army. Sarah, as "Frank Thompson," enlisted and fought in several battles. Sometimes "he" spied behind Confederate lines, convincingly dressed as a woman! But it was as herself, as a nurse, that Sarah served out the last two years of the war, then published the tales of her adventures.
Some women will do anything to be in the thick of things and to help. I wonder if she was scared any time with all of the fighting?
