Plenty of Civil War veterans went out to the palins to fight Indians-what was left of them: a fifth as many as when the Pilgrims landed. Paiute tribal leader and daring scout Sarah Winnemucca(1844?-1891) met with President Hayes and talked to white audiences about the suffering of her people, but it was no use. Their world was disappearing.
At least she tried! I would like to think that there are more people today who would listen and help her.
ReplyDeleteThere is a city in Nevada named for her and her tribe.
