Blount was a physical therapist that worked with amputee patients following World War II. Eating was a challenge to these patients. In 1951 Blount patented a feeding device, called a "portable receptacle support" which allowed people to feed themselves. It used a brace around the neck to support a dish. Blount appeared on a television show, "The Big Idea", in 1953. She was the first black and the first person to be given such recognition.
