Armstrong had his first formal music lesson in the Jones Home for Colored Waifs when he was 11 and played in the school band. Armstrong supported himself by playing in pick-up bands and in small clubs. He helped to create a distinctive blend of blues and ragtime music called Jazz, which became widely popular.
