Marian Anderson(1897-1993)

Anderson was a gifted singer that faced discrimination throughout her career. In 1939, she was asked to perform in Constitution Hall but was barred by the Daughters of the American Revolution. She instead sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, at the urging of Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1955, Anderson became the first African-American to solo with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
