Hughes began writing poetry in eighth grade and was elected class poet. He loved blues and jazz and tried to write poetry using the beat he felt in the music. In his over 40 year career, he wrote sixteen books of poetry, two novels, three autobiographies, and a multitude of plays, short stories, musicals and operas.
