72. Wilma Rudolph

At seven, Wilma Rudolph(1940-1994) had been sick and lost the use of her leg. But she moved and worked until she could walk, then run, then become an outstanding track star. She broke world records and was the first American woman to win three gold medals at one Olympics in 1960.

  1. After Babe Didrickson, this lady was my second all time "Hero". I remember watching her run in the 1960 Olympics and thinking, "I want to run like her." We didn't have a track team for girls at my HS but we did have a basketball team. I was way too short but I did get picked to play on the team. The coach said that it was because I could run circles around everyone else. Thank you, Wilma!
