13. Ann Lee

Thousands of Americans followed, " Mother Ann" Lee (1736-1784) into the religious group known as the Shakers. Eighteen Shaker villages dotted the young country in the Era of Good Feelings after the War of 1812.

  1. Shakers liked to sing. Do you know the song "Tis a Gift to Be Simple". Aaron Copeland, a famous American composer took that Shaker song and built a beautiful musical composition around it called "Appliachian Spring". You should listen to it sometime. The words to the song are also very simple, but they are not a part of the piece, only the tune is.
