40. Jane Addams

Jane Addams(1860-1935) and her friends began Hull House in Chicago to help the poor with day care, legal and medical help, and classes. Miss Adams, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931, invented the profession of social work. She inspired a generation of young people such as Eleanor Roosevelt.

  1. Another hard working woman, who wanted nothing more than to help poor working wome. The idea of Day Care came from her. Amelia Erheardt was also inspired by her and in fact worked at Hull House for a time.
