31. Emily Dickinson

One of the great American poets of the 19th century was not well known at all until after she died. Emily Dickinson(1830-1886) was just too shy. Her secret poems are still carefully studied and admired.

  1. I'm a nobody.
    Who are you?
    Are you a nobody too?
    How dreary to be somebody.
    How public like a frog
    To tell your name
    The live long day
    To an adiring bog.

That is one of Emily D.'s poems. I had to memorize it in 3rd grade. I never forgot it.
She wrote many more and some are very touching and beautiful. for someone that they say was a recluse, she certainly had an eye for the way the world worked.
