Harriet Tubman, aka "Moses" (1820-1913), fled to freedom in Maryland in 1849. During the next ten years she helped nearly 300 people, including her parents, make daring escapes from slavery.

Just look at that noble face. It is the face of a hard working and determined woman who took great chances so that others might have freedom. Her favorite song "Follow the Drinking Gourd" of course. It was sung among the slaves as a "spiritual" but everyone knew that the drinking gourd was really the Big Dipper" and the North Star on its handle pointed the way to freedom.
