In the War of 1812, First Lady Dolley Madison(1768-1849) fled the President's House just before the British set fire to it in 1814. She saved important papers, the big portrait of George Washington(painted by Gilbert Stuart), and her parrot. Then a summmer thunderstomr saved the burning capital.

There use to be an icecream company named Dolly Madison. They said that they named the company that in honor of the first lady because she introduced icream to the White House. I don't know if it is true. If you find out let me know.
