33. Calamity Jane

One of the most legendary women of the frontier was Calamity Jane(1852?-1903), otherwise known as rough-talking Martha Jane Canary Burk, scout for General Custer and heroine of many a dime novel.

  1. When my first grade teacher went around the room and asked what we wanted to be when we grew up, I told her that I wanted to be like a cowboy. I already knew about "Calamity Jane" and Annie Oakley and wanted to be just like them.

Well I never did learn to ride a horse very well since I lived in the city but I can pass fair on one. I was a sharp shooter, marksman rank at the age of 10 Years and by adulthood could shoot any clay pigeon thrown. Now I don't even go near guns and shotguns are just too heavy.

    These women were my heroes.
