5. Phillis Wheatley


One such child was sold to the Wheatley family of Boston. They taught her to read and write her new language. By the time she was twenty, Phillis Wheatley (1753?-1784) had published a book of poetry. She was the first African-American to be published.

  1. Thank goodness for the bravery of the Wheatley family. Did you know that in the South during that time, if you were found educating your black slaves, you were sent to prison.
